While Iâm in the car on my way home, Ally calls my cell phone. Earlier, we had exchanged phone numbers, and something tells me that I am going to regret giving Ally mineâespecially since it seems like sheâs inclined to abuse those privileges already. Iâm a woman who needs space, and Iâve already seen her or talked to her on four separate occasions in less than twenty-four hours.
âHello? This is Nicole.â
âItâs Ally again,â she whispers into the phone.
âIs everything okay?â
âNo,â Ally squeaks.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âI hear the same voices outside again.â
âAlly,â I sigh. âYou live near the breezeway on the first floor. You are going to have to get used to hearing other residents walking past your apartment door.â
âI donât think thatâs what it is,â she says in a hushed voice. âI think itâs the same people as last time coming back to see if they can break in.â
âHow can you be sure of that?â Iâm doubtful, but I let her state her claim.
âIt sounds like the same people.â
âCan you check out your window and see if there is anyone out there?â Iâm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, although Iâm unconvinced.
âNo, I havenât done that. Iâm afraid theyâll see me and try to hurt me for being a âwitness.ââ
âCan you turn a light on so they know that someone is home and it might spook them away?â I ask.
âMy lights are on,â Ally insists.
âAll right,â I say and turn the steering wheel. Normally I like to bike to work or walk, but our headquarters where I had to do the paperwork is a little further out, so I had to take my car tonight. âIâm pulling into the apartment complex right now. Iâll come check it out for you in a minute, just hold on tight.â
âThank you so much.â Ally breathes a sigh of relief into the receiver. âYou are such a lifesaver, Nicole.â
âItâs really nothing, donât mention it,â I say and hang up, heading to my designated parking spot where I pull in, and hope for the best.
I really want to believe Ally, but part of me is afraid she might have ulterior motives to get me into bed with her. Will I be strong enough to resist her seductive temptation? The jury is still out on that one.
I walk toward our building. Upon first glance, I donât see anything unusual.
Itâs relatively quiet for early dawn which is normal, and there is a silver hue painted across the sky that hasnât yet achieved sunrise status.
A film of wispy fog hangs just below my ankles, skating across the grass and on the pavement where Iâm drifting along the sidewalk.
I pass my own stairwell to get to Allyâs apartment. Iâm tired, but I promised her Iâd check in on her just to make sure nothing out of the ordinary captures my attention.
Iâm not expecting to see anything alarming, so when I reach her door, itâs no surprise to me that everything appears to be undisturbed and in regular order.
I debate whether to knock on the door, because sheâs already a little frazzled as it is.
